I Believe Windows Mobile 7 is the last chance Microsoft has at maintaining their role in the mobile phone operating system business. It may already be too late. It will take something drastic for them continue as a major player.(an open source windows or something big)
When it comes to speed.... Android wins hands down.
Also look at the development of android software to windows software, recently.

I hope Microsoft has not become so wrapped up in them selves that they can hear the consumers any more.
