I had a M710 for two years with Verizon. They changed their iXRTT network for data enable phones to charge data against minutes on plan. What you describe suggest that this plan is carrier over to the EVDO network. Probably not!
Check to see if you are getting EVDO service when using the phone this way. If so great for you!!! Don't tell Verizon.
