What are the best or most appropriate and useful 1st accessories to buy initially when a new user? Also, want to be able to use Q to keep vacation info (plane info, reservations, maps, etc.) and wine list (in excel) as well as tasting notes. What would be best for this? Was thinking of case, extended battery, Docs to Go, 2GB SD.... Help! Thanks

At the bare minimum you will want a 2GB MiniSD card and a screen protector. Any 2.5 inch screen protector will work, you don't have to get an expensive one made just for the Q. IMO the extended battery kind of defeats the purpose of getting the Q as it makes the phone much thicker. Without it, you will have to charge the Q at least every night (more often if you use it heavily) but I have found that once I got into the habit of doing so it's a non-issue. As for software, check the front page for information on how to put MS Office from WM6 on your Q, instead of having to pay for Documents to Go. And the case... there are a many different cases available for the Q, and it all comes down to personal preference. I carry it in a Motorola OEM pouch when I am dressed for business and a Cellet hard rubberized case when I am going casual.
