I just picked up the Q a couple of days ago for work. I do a lot of traveling so I'm looking into getting GPS up and running on my moto. I've found this rather cheap receiver over at Newegg.com and was wondering if it would be compatiable.
I can google search with the best of them, but it doesn't help when your knowledge in all this GPS mumbo jumbo is limited. Someone please give me some advice!!
I would recommend finding a slightly more expensive BT receiver with the SiRF Star III chipset. The two you are looking at are the older, slower SiRF Star II. I have a Holux 236 that cost me $70. I would recommend avoiding the Holux brand based on my experiences with it, but there are other brands of SiRF Star III BT receivers in the same price range.
The Holux 236 works well with the Q and Route66 when it works, but the hardware is low quality and is prone to fail, especially if the unit gets too hot from sitting on the dash of my car. Since purchasing the Holux I have encountered many accounts of others having the same issues on the internet. If I was going to buy another BT GPS receiver it would be the Navibe GB735. It can be found for around $60 + shipping.
It does work with Map4PDA and Google Maps, but I have not tried Microsoft Live. Google Maps is a neat utility, but is not useful for navigation. If you are intending to use the GPS for navigation, you will definitely want either Route66 or Co-Pilot so that you can have voice prompts.
Sorry, I don't know of any free apps with voice prompts. A cheap alternative is Mapopolis, which allows you to buy maps for individual states at only $19 a piece.
Scratch that, I just checked the http://www.mapopolis.com/ site and it says "Mapopolis has discontinued all consumer sales." I have no idea why.
Hey Syndil, thanks a ton for your help, I really appreciate it.
After you posted about Mapopolis I went and checked it out and was able to still download the software to run on my Q. I surfed around the site and you're right they are no longer offering the maps. I did some google searches and I came up with a few torrent files offering the US maps. Would it be unethical to download these maps for free since I'm unable to pay for them anymore? What do you think?
