Ever since I determined that I could use my MotoQ as an iPOD substitute I've pined for the ability to play the music via my car's stereo speakers while driving. Not that the built-in speakers aren't wonderful *indoors*, they're not the best when my car's convertible top is down. I started researching FM Transmitters using Google and didn't get too excited. But, I've found that a device available from BestBuy allows me to successfully use my MotoQ as a mobile music jukebox for my car.
Anyone else using an FM transmitter? What works? What doesn't, for you??
I work for Best Buy and I'm an iPod junkie, so I'm extremely familiar with this kind of technology. The truth is, it really just depends on how much you want to invest in your solution.
I personally have an 'iPod-ready' headunit. For about $200 I was able to purchase this and have it installed. This lets my iPod link directly into my headunit so I can manipulate the menus & etc directly. Obviously, THIS device would not be compatible with the Q. However...
I have used FM Transmitters of numerous make/manufacturers. As a rule of thumb, if you're an audiophile of any sort I don't recommend them. They are noticeably staticy and 'hollow' sounding. The quality definitely is not where it needs to be to justify the purchase.
I would recommend, for Q users serious about enjoying their audio through a car stereo, upgrading to a headunit that supports an Audio Input. This would give you a direct digital line into the audio channels of your vehicle. This setup yields no noticeable decrease in performance and most non-factory headunits will include an Aux audio port either on the front or rear.
If its front, you're in business. Just jack straight into the front of the headunit with your Q and a $10 male-to-male audio cable. If its in the rear, you can probably have the installer run a rear aux port out through your dash for an extra $10 or so and you'll then be ready to plug-in as well.
Hope this helps! Let me know if theres anything else I can help out with...
That's some great tips bjshively! My car's 6-disc changer also has a tape deck (yep, tape) so I can use a tape adapter to listen to my music. It's not a pretty sight, but it works flawlessly!
Ahhh yes. I forgot all about the tape deck options, as well. A good friend of mine uses his iPod via tape adapter. The quality on those tends to be decent. A LOT better than FM transmitters, in my experience.
I thought about a tape adapter...or a FM transmitter. Now I want a bluetooth adapter. Just plug them into the RCA inputs for your deck. Wireless audio! I'm planning on buying one for my house and one for my car. ...I haven't really done this yet, but eb says it should work. Here's a few models, let me know if you see cheaper/better models...
Here's a new option - use a new aftermarket headunit that has a USB port on the front? Kenwood, Alpine (uses a tethered opt. with Ai-net abled receivers), Clarion, JVC, etc...
Then pick up an adapter thumbdrive that accepts the miniSD!
Better Yet! If you want to keep the stock look of your car and you have a CD changer port on your OEM equipment, buy an Aux Input (Peripheral Electronics - iPod2Car Solutions) and Motorola’s DC800. These two device's allow me to jump in my Jeep, Pair with my head unit, Roll listening to Groove Salad (somafm.com) I love EVDO because of internet radio! I have tried a few Bluetooth receivers and they were not up to par. Their tech sup would say it was the Q but bull****, It was a bad sound processor in the unit. Anyways, All in all, I have 200 bucks and now I have a Bluetooth Jeep that is still stock.

Yeah, I ended up getting RCA inputs for my BMW and ditching the bluetooth. Bluetooth sucks WAY too much USB. Why isn't it hardware accelerated? Why doesn't it have it's own processor?
