Wifi is for speed mainly. 3G has more of a convenience factor. Wifi can eat up your battery faster, unless you plug in while connected. Wifi can also be used in reverse to tether a PC or laptop. which will use the 3G data connection.. but you need to find a special app for that. Now I know I said Wifi is good for its fast data speeds, but 3G is catching up. Currently 3G speeds on a VZ network with Rev.A can get up to 3.8 Mbits per sec downlink. However, AT&T in a good spot I think supposedly does twice as fast. Wifi speeds on average are variable, but on a good network with T1 or cable, the 10Mbits Sec.. connection should more than suffice. Wifi, you must also find a hotspot, of course. But they are all over the place. Heck, I found Wifi hotspots at freeway rest stops.. weird.
Oh, and with 3G, you will use your data plan and can go over your supposedly "Unlimited " data. With Wifi, you can DL as much as you want, unless the hotspot has usage rules.

Well said COPS. In my experience you really get what you pay for. I've heard complaints about data plan costs in general across all carriers but the convenience of being able to use your data connection (3G) no matter where you are surpasses Wi-Fi. Unless, you are in a low to no coverage area and you can't get 3G then you have to rely on Wi-Fi for data and what if you are not in a hot spot?
I hear more complaints about lack of 3G coverage with AT&T and yet, iPhone sales are through the roof. I don't get it. Does everyone in California need to have an Iphone that badly that you would sacrifice call quality? Just get the Ipod. You can get the same apps right?
I'd rather go for dependability and being on a network and having service that actually works, and works really good. For the business traveler being connected via 3G is also better than Wi-Fi because its more secure. Airports can be a hackers utopia. I'd rather surf on my smartphone and use my unlimited data than get on a netbook and search out a unsecured Wi-Fi hotspot that may or may not work. It depends on what the need of the user is. Good thing for smartphones that can do both.
