I own a motorola Q and I can't figure out if it has an underline character key that I can use to type an underline when entering email addresses that require one. Can it be that Motorola missed it?

It's a little hard to find...

Hit the "alt" key (left side of the keyboard)
then hit the "cap" key (right side of the key board)

An "Insert Symbol" screen will appear, the underscore is the first charater you can pick.

Yeah that's a bummer that its not on the default keyboard map, I rather have the underscore then the ampersand on the keyboard anyday...
