for whatever reason, when i put the file in my Apps/sounds directory, I still don't see it in the list of available ringtones . any suggestions?

I keep my ringtones in the Storage Card, in the root folder (Storage Card\)...

Nop...you can even use a whole song as ringtone. Where are you storing your ringtone? I use the Storage Card, keeping them in the main folder

i found out it was because i had the files too large. The max size is 300,000 but then you can make it larger also.
