If you've always wanted to use your Verizon phone to tether to your laptop via USB Cable (since you don't have Bluetooth) but never could because the man kept holding you down, good news! The Motorola Q allows you use your USB Sync cable to tether to your PC (sorry, if you have a Mac can only use the Bluetooth tutorial here.)! Remember to do this at your own risk (this might void your contract with Verizon)...all you need to do is follow these instructions. I have added pictures so that you can see what's going on. Enjoy!
If you want to download the Windows Executable (.EXE) to install from your Desktop PC you can download it in our Downloads section (Windows Executable includes the Registry Add-in).
5. With the Q still attached and sync still running open up "My Computer" then "Mobile Device" on the Windows machine.
6. Navigate to the "My Documents" folder on the Q (Mobile Device).
7. Drag and drop the two downloaded .cabs and the .reg file to the "My Documents" folder of the Q for a total of three files as seen below:
8. Disconnect the Q from the PC.
9. On the Q from the Today screen press "Start", select "File Manager" and then navigate to "My Documents."
10. Highlight and hit the center D-Pad button on the Resco Explorer installer .cab first and let it install. Don't worry about the message about display not looking right because it will still work for our purposes!
11. Repeat step for the Registry Add-In (Not .reg file).
12. Return to the Today screen.
13. Press "Start", select "Resco Explorer" and navigate to "My Documents."
14. Highlight the .reg file and hit the center D-Pad button.
15. Agree to installing the additions to the registry.
16. Exit out of Resco.
17. Remove the battery, wait 30 seconds, reinstall battery and turn device on.
18. Enter ##342587 and hit the TALK or SEND key a new dialog screen should come up.
19. Move the navigation key to the right to select "Enable," press OK then EXIT.
QUICK TIP: Sometimes the DUN setting doesn't stick after a power cycle. You should save ##342587 in your phone book as (Dial-Up Networking) - yes, with the parentheses so that it shows up at the top of your phonebook.
20. Go to Start>Accessories>Modem Link
21. Hit "Activate."
22. Download and unzip the Motorola Q USB driver here.
23. Plug in the Motorola Q. When it asks for the driver, select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), then only check the "Include this location in the search" box and browse to where you unzipped the driver. Hit next and then "Continue Anyway" if a dialog box comes up. Hit finish when the wizard is complete.
NOTE: When Modem Link is activated your Motorola Q will not sync with your computer. If you would like to restore ActiveSync functionality to your Motorola Q, simply press deactivate in the Modem Link software BEFORE you detach your USB cable. Then plug the USB cable back in and it should act like normal.
24. After you install the Motorola Q USB Modem drivers, on your computer go to the Control Panel and then Network Connections and "New Connection Wizard." Select the following:
Connect to the network at my workplace. NEXT.
Dial-up connection. NEXT.
ISP Name: Verizon Wireless (EVDO). NEXT.
Phone Number: #777
Anyone's use / My use only (your choice)
FINISH
25. When you at finished with the wizard a DUN connection dialog box should appear.
Username: (leave blank)
Password: vzw
26. Click on dial, and after a few seconds it should connect! Enjoy!
Hello-
Everything works until I type in the ##342587 and press the green dial button. When I do this it just dials the number. I never get the screen to turn on DUN. Any ideas?
Hello-
After trying various things and getting nowhere with the ##342587 part of the solution, I called verizon and asked how I could get DUN to work. They added a $15 service to my account and then instructed me to dial *22899 to update the programming for my phone and download a different driver Motorola Q USB driver from the website. Then I downloaded and installed a the special Motorola Q version of vzAccess. It seems to work now. It looks like its programming on their back end that is keeping DUN from working.
I couldn't get ##342587 to work either. Santhusbro, did you do this recently? I live near Boston, could it be a regional block? Anybody else have this issue?
