Review – Desktop Charger for the Motorola Q

Admit it; you bought the Motorola Q solely for its looks. So why let it dangle from your desktop when you can display it in all its glory with the Desktop Charger from Motorola? We purchased our desktop charger on Verizon Wireless’ website for $39.99 with free shipping. A little steep we think, but read on to see if it is worth the price.

The contents of the box included just the cradle, manual and limited warranty statement—no travel charger or data cable included (shucks).

You can see from the pictures that the charger was designed with expansion in mind. Not only can you charge your device in the cradle, you can also charge a standard or extended battery in the back at the same time. The charger’s construction is solid with a two tone (gray and black) finish. This is good because it doesn’t clash with anything else on your table (we’re sure your table is cleaner and more stylin’ than the tables at HelloMotoQ, so yes, it does matter).

Unlike conventional cradles, the Motorola Q slides in from the side to charge and sync. The “side slide” as we like to call it takes a bit of getting used to since you have to “aim” or jiggle the Q in place. We took a “cradle” survey at HelloMotoQ to see how long it took to cradle the Q (I think the joke starts off with: “How many HelloMotoQers does it take to insert a Q?”). On average it took about two tries to get it in there without picking up the unit or looking at the port and using two hands. We’re just glad that the charger has enough grip to stay in one spot while we inserted the Q. So remember, if your desktop is dusty you might have some slip and slide fun.

The Q can either charge with the charger included with your Q or charge and sync simultaneously with the USB cable (again included with your Q). Just make sure you have ActiveSync installed on your desktop if you want to charge via USB.

If you want to charge a battery, simply place it in the back of the unit called the “rear pocket.” (yes it’s a weird name, we know). If you are charging a standard capacity battery, place the rear pocket divider into the lower slot of the pocket. If you are charging an extended battery, place the divider on the top. We found that the divider was indeed necessary to keep the battery in place while charging, so don’t throw it out. You also can only charge one battery at a time. There is also an LED indicator light next to the rear pocket showing the status of the battery. If there is no light on-there is no battery, flashing green means the battery is charging, solid green means the battery is charged, flashing yellow means the battery is waiting to be charged, and flashing red means you have an invalid or defective battery. Our guess is that you don’t ever want to see red. Ever.

In addition to charging an extended battery on the back, the desktop charger can also charge the Motorola Q with an extended battery installed. The back support of the charger allows room for the extended battery as shown in the pictures.

Conclusion
The Desktop Charger for the Motorola Q is a great purchase if you have additional batteries or if you wish to see what’s going on with your Q without having to pick it up and look at it. We feel that it is a bit pricey, but then again it is a Motorola product. A 12 month limited warranty is included with the Desktop Charger which basically covers defects by Motorola. You can purchase the Desktop Charger on the Verizon Wireless’ website here.

Rating: 4.5/5
Pros: Solid construction, ability to charge with extended battery installed, sync and charge via USB.
Cons: Inserting the Motorola Q takes a learning curve, you can only charge one battery at a time, a bit pricey for a cradle, does not include travel charger or USB cradle.

Solbadguy:

Unfortunately it does not work with a skin case like the BoxWave FlexiSkin.

Ummm.. me.. i dont need a cradle.. all it really is... is a dock with a min-b usb cable attached. And the way that you have to slide towards the left doesnt seem like it eliminates attachment time. Im going to just stick with hooking my phone up and letting it stay on the desk.. lol

Is there a way to have it linked to the PC while in the cradle?
