Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP), which includes heavy weights such as Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, LG, and Nokia have decided to standardize the micro-USB as the charging interface for mobile phones. This would put an end to needless waste created by needing separate chargers for different devices.
"This is cheaper to the manufacturer, and also results in a smaller, less heavy box, which reduces on shipping costs, storage costs, warehouse costs and so on," Bubley said. "It has got to have beneficial effects for everyone." Telecom analyst Dean Bubley says.
The slim Micro-USB connector is slim enough to fit into phone designs of the future.
This is great news! I have a MOTO Q and my wife has a MOTO RAZR and it is nice to be able to interchange our chargers. Now it can be that way for everyone.

I doubt this will be the new standard for everyone.. Mini-USB was/is fine and would be the standard as well If companies were not so stuck on being proprietary.. Hell I have 3 diff Motorola phones here at my work, all newer phones, all different charging interfaces. They could have easily made all 3 phones mini-USB... But they didn't.. Because they are money motivated jackasses..
Say you can use the same car charger on all your phones... The cell company just lost $20-$40 per unit on an additional "accessory". They make the chargers different for the very reason that you need to buy an aditional item.
On a side note though this looks much easier to break this one, thus causing more breakage on the accessories as well as potential phone repairs for when the connector breaks off inside you phone... Thus more $$$ to be made by said phone company in accessories and repairs...
