I have one question before I try this hack. I am running PDA net which works perfectly while tethered. It is nice to have this option as the Q then uses the battery power from the laptop when online.
If I set up the blue tooth DUN will it cause any conflict with the PDAnet set up or can I use either or interchangably?
Great question. This hack should not interfere with PDANet. However, even if it does you can just power cycle the phone or do the ##342587 to disable the hack.
Success! I have now tested both Bluetooth DUN and PDAnet DUN and both will work. Bluetooth is considerably slower however typical speed test reveal that it is connected to the internet at about 220Kbps. The laptop shows the Bluetooth connection is running at about 900Kbps.
With the USB cable connection the Laptop shows a 2.4MBps connection, and a speed connection of about 640Kbps.
Because the USB cable powers the phone and has a higher connection speed I will generally use that, but it sure is nice if the cable isn't handy you can still connect wirelessly using Bluetooth DUN at 4 times normal dial up speeds.
I have one more question. I have my phone set up to wirelessly sync. The problem is that sometimes the Bluetooth or PDAnet don't relinquish the connection and so the wireless sync can't connect to the server.
If I use the ##342587 command will that disconnect the bluetooth DUN so that wireless sync then begins to work?
Or is the best way just to restart the phone when I am finished with the bluetooth tether?
I'm happy that you like the hack. Thank you for the update, i'm sure this will help oethers using PDA Net as well. The best way to disconnect the bluetooth is either disconnect from the internet on your computer (that should turn the connection off) of you can power cycle the device. Let me know what works best for you.
Tim,
You made this way to easy.
THANK YOU
It works flawlessly on my PC via Bluetooth
Now I have one un answerd question
I have an older iBook without bluetooth
I would like to be able to use the DUN with it,
when I plug in the Q via USB it is as if the system does not recognize the phone as a network device.
Any Suggestions?
To answer your first question, you need to activate the Modem Link before you connect your Motorola Q to your PC. If not, ActiveSync will pick it up and reserve the Q upon connection.
As for your second question, the dial up networking connection is created by the Bluetooth DUN profile that your PC's Bluetooth detects upon pairing. Simply pairing the devices together does not do the trick. You must also search for the services available on the Q (one being Bluetooth DUN) to get it working.
Please let me know if you have any other questions! Good luck!
OK, lets say I didnt connect DUN from a cold boot.
I go back and check ##342587 and make sure it is ENABLE and I hit OK.
Then I go to Modem Link and make sure it is Activated.
Then I plug the Q into the USB. I hear the connect sound, but ActiveSync never comes on. Thats the way it is suppose to be right.
Now I dial. It never connect. I tried 4x each time. Always like that. But if I do a cold boot, I always get connected.
Am I the only one?
Second question: I do the pairing successfully. My laptop says my Q comes on when I turn it on. I Bluebooth Manager in Q, I didn see any DUN. Where is the Step #20 of "Connect Bluetooth Connection" comes from?
I wonder if I need a bluetooth sofware like BlueSoeil? I am so confused. My bluetooth is Dell built in and it already paired done.
