Google Android running on Windows Mobile phones!

Google Android running on Windows Mobile phones !
January 02, 2008 | By Edward J. Rutkowski.

In second half of 2008 the first mobile phones powered by Google Android will go on sale. In this way Microsoft's Windows Mobile will get new, extremely strong, competitor.

Not only HTC corporation is using vast amounts of money earned on sales of Windows Mobile phones to invest in their phones powered by Google Android, but also fans of Google Android mobile operating system are using Windows Mobile to test applications with use of Windows Mobile phones:

I started a project to "demonstrate" Android on existing handsets by way of a VNC server running inside the Android emulator. After further exploration I discovered that one already exists, apparently inside of /system/lib/libsurfaceflinger.so and actually does work. The performance of this implementation is terrible, and ultimately would not run well connected to my Moto Q running .NET VNC Viewer (http://dotnetvnc.sourceforge.net). So, I found an existing project implementing a frame buffer VNC server and adapted/rewrote it to work on Android. Performance is still bad, but it is workable and does let you "see" Android running on a 320x240 mobile LCD which is certainly very cool.

It looks like Windows Mobile is being pushed to the "business users" niche not only by Apple iPhone and Symbian but also by Google Android operating system... and Microsoft needs to do something radically new, and not the same "catch-up game", in order to keep up with competition! Joking is over.

Interesting, although the headline is a bit misleading. Android isn't actually running on a WM phone--they are remotely controlling another device running Android using VNC on a WM phone. That's like saying my home PC can run Solaris and Mac OSX simply because I can remotely control either of those OSs via VNC.

BTW if there is interest I can write a tutorial on how to control your home PC via the Q using the .NET VNC mentioned in the article.

The title is indeed misleading. The point I took from the article was that manufacturers who have been making Windows Mobile phones like HTC may start putting Android on the very same phones instead. Then it goes on about how the writer already gave Android a spin on his Moto Q with a VNC. Then it wraps up his first point that they might put Android on to woo consumers because Windows Mobile is aimed at business customers.
