Although the screen of the Motorola Q is not a touch screen it is still venerable to everyday wear and tear (i.e. scratches). Sure, you can get a case to protect your Q’s body from scratches but it still doesn’t protect your precious screen. You also don’t want a protector to get in your way; you want the protector to be as unnoticeable as possible. BoxWave has recently announced their screen protector line for the Motorola Q and has once again provided a protector for review.
BoxWave has two types of screen protectors: The ClearTouch Anti-Glare and the ClearTouch Crystal. It’s honestly comes down to user preference. The Anti-Glare version defuses incoming light sources (i.e. the sun, light bulbs) and it doesn’t leave any smudge marks after putting the phone up to you ear (a lot of people hate that I’ve noticed). The downfall is that you don’t get the “glass like” quality since you are more aware that there is a screen protector on the device. The ClearTouch Crystal version is virtually invisible and incredibly smooth—you can’t see that the protector is even there. The screen colors are much more vivid as well. Unfortunately you will have smudge marks after touching the screen or using the phone, but it is a sacrifice that you will have to make if you want the protector to be completely invisible. I’m all about sacrifices.
I received BoxWave’s Crystal version in the mail and the package it came in two pieces: a piece for the main part and a piece for the top. I was wondering for a while why they did this but I realized that the top half (near the earpiece) is a bit raised. If it was just one piece there would definitely be a bubble near the top. I’m surprised they even provided a piece for the top since it isn’t really part of the screen anyway. That’s BoxWave for you, always looking out for the little guy (little piece in this case). Included along with the screen protector was a “ClearTouch Applicator” and a lint-free cloth. The directions were directly on the back of the package and seemed simple enough. What wasn’t clear was if there was an order of application. I decided to start with the smaller one first and then apply the larger one.
I used the lint-free cloth to clean up my Motorola Q so that it was ultra clean before I applied the first piece. The top piece didn’t include what sides to remove first so I just went ahead and peeled off the two backings in random order. The top piece required some eyeing but it seemed to fit fine, but because it was so small it also seemed a bit flimsy. I feel like after prolonged use it might peel off. But I don’t really care too much about the top portion as much as I do the main screen since that’s where all the action is at.
Applying the main screen protector was a bit easier. After thoroughly cleaning your screen with the lint-free cloth once again, just remove one protective coating at a time in order and place the protector on from one side to another. Be sure to place the lint-free cloth on top of the Q before you use the ClearTouch Applicator for maximum results to minimize potential scratching from the Applicator.
The ClearTouch fits very well on the Motorola Q, and it is almost invisible. I don’t even notice it while I am using daily tasks. I found that the top screen protector is small and almost useless considering that one, it’s a small surface area, and two, it’s not even the main attraction anyway. I decided to go without the top protector as seen in the following images.
Rinsing or “refreshing” the screen protector is simple and needed every now and then. The trick is if you apply it right the first time, you won’t have to refresh it for a long time. I decided to refresh the ClearTouch anyway because I was really curious to see how the stickiness would hold up to the water. I found out that the best way to remove the ClearTouch is to use the backing that it came with. Just stick it on top of the ClearTouch and peel directly up. It worked perfectly. I would recommend keeping the backing (as well as the cloth and applicator) in the little pouch that it comes with and save it for when you want to wash it. The directions tell me to flap it up and down like an instant film photograph to dry the screen protectors. The main screen one flapped fine, but the smaller top piece didn’t have enough weight to flap. Wait a few seconds for most of the water drops to dry, and place it on. If you are using mild hand soap to clean the ClearTouch, then you’ll want to apply the ClearTouch as soon as there are just a few drops left—that way you won’t get soap spots. Also, by applying the ClearTouch when wet allows you to maneuver the screen protector around before it “sets”. Don’t worry, the water droplets will evaporate after a few minutes and it won’t leave dust.
Overall the ClearTouch Crystal is a must have for the Motorola Q. If you are concerned about the Motorola Q’s screen, getting a screen protector is no question. BoxWave does the job again!
Rating: 4.5/5 Pros: Protects the Motorola Q almost invisibly, screen is still super clear with the ClearTouch on, washing Cons: Top piece a bit hard to apply (almost useless anyway), you need to have your screen SUPER clean before applying the ClearTouch. Fingerprint smudging or face grease can occur after phone use (that’s what Anti-Glare is for).
You can purchase the ClearTouch screen protector for $12.95 USD (1-pack) as well as a full line of other BoxWave addons for the Motorola Q here!
Got this product (The anti-glare one) for my phone and have been using it for a day now and it's great!! The best screen protector that I have bought, and I've gone through a few of them. Well worth the money.
