Hello everyone! I am a new Motorola Q user... I love the phone thus far.... But for me to keep it, I need to get it working on a new Intel 2.0 DUO MacBook running OS X 10.4.7.
Question: Does a HOW TO exist on setting up DUNS for Tethering of the Motorola Q through Verizon with EVDO (unlimited data 44.99 + 15 tethering) active on the phone # already?
I cant figure this out... Help Help Help!
I am willing to write a detailed "HOW TO" if I can get enough feedback quickly and get this working.
Also I just got the new Verizon release of Mobile office kit for Moto Razor V3m with Mac. This basically means that I have a CD which installed VZAccess on a Mac, but didn't recognize the Q when I attached it via USB.
Thanks in advance! And I am looking forward to enjoying my Q!
Just type "DUN in Motorola Q" and enter it into Google. You'll find plenty of info on how to use the Q as a modem, depending on which version of the OS you have. If you have OS ver. 5.1.70, then you can use the "hack" method.
If you have OS ver 5.1.95 (which is the new software upgrade for the Q) then you will only be able to use the Q as a modem in one of two ways:
1. You will have to pay Verizon (assuming that's your carrier) an additional $15 per month on top of the $49.95 you pay for unlimited data access. Unfortunately, the software upgrade which places a new icon in the start menu of the Q for "DUN Modem" actually disables the ability to use the Q as a modem unless the carrier authorizes the connection to the EVDO network.
2. You can use PDANet (which has a one-time charge of $34.00), and you can use it with either version of the OS (either the new build or the old one). It works flawlessly, and should work on a Mac as well....I think.
If neither of these two methods work for you on a Mac, then I suggest you check out Qusers.com or the official MotoQ website to see if anyone there has any experience with a Mac.
I got my Q working with Bluetooth on my MacBook tonight. It's pretty easy really.
-First, call up Verizon (if you have the updated OS) and have them add the $15 DUN service to your account
- Make sure Bluetooth on your Q is activated by going to Start>Bluetooth>Bluetooth manager>Settings
-In the settings make sure Bluetooth is ON, and click the Allow other Bluetooth devices to see the phone
-Now link your Q to your Powerbook by going to System Preferences>Bluetooth on your Mac
-Click on the Devices tab, and then click Set Up New Device
-Select Mobile Phone and the on screen instructions should walk you through. For now it will only list Address Book as a check item
-You will also have to input a passcode from your Mac to the Q during this process
-After linking the Q, go to the Bluetooth menu (main menu bar) and select Browse Device
-Select the Q and a browse window should open
-Download the Resco Explorer 2005 .CAB file here: Resco Explorer 2005 for Smartphone: Downloads
-Download the Resco Registry module here: Dedicated free file hosting upload storage space - 1_Registry_s.ARM.CAB
-Download the hacked reg file here: http://www.howardforums.com/attachme...chmentid=60368
-Drag the three files you just downloaded over to the Q (note, unzip the hacked registry file first)
-On the Q, go to File Manager>My Documents
-You should see all three files you just transferred there
-Start by clicking on the Resco Explorer.CAB file. That should install the Explorer app
-Next click on the Registry_s.ARM.Cab file. That should install the second part. Ignore any warnings that say these apps aren't designed for your OS
-Next attempt to click on the q-bt-hack.reg file. It may auto add to the registry, probably not.
-If it didn't auto add, go back to the Q’s home screen, hit start, and find and open the Resco Explorer application
-Navigate to your My Documents using the Explorer app
-Now click again on the q-bt-hack.reg file
-It should now ask if you want to add this to your registry file....say yes
-Turn the phone off and remove battery for more than 30 secs
-Restart phone
-Head back to System Preferences on your Mac, and go to Bluetooth again -Click on your Q device in the list and hit Configure
-A new option to 'connect to internet' should now be available to check
-Hit continue and it will ask for the settings
-username is your cell phone number xxxxxxxxxx@vzw3g.com
-Password is vzw
-number to dial is #777
-I use the OS X Verizon Support PC 200 script
-leave the 'show modem in menu' box checked.
-That should do it.
-Go to the modem icon in the menu bar and select connect.
-You should now be connected to the net.
This is a post made by another user on this thread which was originally for the old Q OS. This changed a little with the updated OS, and this post (here) relfects what I did with the updated OS to get this working.
Here's a screen shot of what it should look like on your Mac when everything is working.
Thanks for the details!!! I am off to try your procedure as speak. 1 question, i have the 44.95 Unlimited data on my @, + the 15 DUNS Tethering option. Do I need both?
I'll keep you posted on how things go.... Did you get it to work via USB cable? Do you need USB 2.0 cable? Have you tested the Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test difference between being connected via Bluetooth and USB? What was the speed differential?
I even purchased Mobile Sync for Windows Mobile (39.95) and VZAccess for OS X 10.4.7 - Motorola Razor (39.95) which I need to return for both of them i guess...

My Mac is a second PC so I have my Q using my XP system as its "home" system. I've never connected my Q to my Mac via USB. I have sent files back and forth to my Q using my Mac via bluetooth. I also sync wirelessly to my corp exchange servers so I don't really use Active Sync for anything other than the occasional install.
I responded to your other question via PM.
You will need both the data plan and the $15 DUN plan.

Has any one gotten PDANet to work with the Mac? If so how? I download PDANet and installed it with my windows desktop. PDANet works fine on windows. But when I a ran PDANet it shows that “Bluetooth DUN not supported”
On PDANet’s web site http://www.junefabrics.com/pdanet/faq.php#mac it states “PdaNet does not support USB tethering on Mac. However PdaNet does expose a standard Bluetooth DUN service which can be connected from Mac if it supports Bluetooth, although you still need to install and activate PdaNet through a Windows PC. You can see more details from http://www.junefabrics.com/pdanet/bluetooth.htm.”
if you follow the bluetooth setup link it describes two ways to use Bluetooth:
Approach 1: through Bluetooth ActiveSync.
Approach 2: through Bluetooth DUN (N/A for Motorola Q).

So it looks like neither of these are an option.
I got bluetooth DUN working on my MacBook quite easily without paying PDAnet $34. Everything you need comes with your Mac and Q. I've not gotten it to work on my XP system, but on the MacBook it was a breeze.
Read my post. It's super simple and I've been using it for days now. I use it every morning and night on the train ride to and from the office.

I'd rather not pay $15 dollors a month to do this, if I could pay $34
