I have recently purchase a motoq and subscribe through Bell Canada.
I have connected my phone to my pc with the usb cable and have used activesync with Microsoft Outlook and it works fine via the USB.
When I unplug the USB and want to send email the Send/Receive button is greyed out. I can create a new email account pointing to my sympatico account (the account on my outlook) and it sends and receives email with no issues. The problem is it does not sync with my outlook and I have to delete emails in two places.
I realize this may be a lack of my understanding of how this is supposed to work but all I want to do is get my email in outlook and on my device (remotely) and sync them up periodically.
Your phone won't sync with your Outlook over the internet unless you have a Microsoft Exchagne Server with OWA setup. I've just finished setting this up for work here.
It sounds like you are using Outlook to POP your emails and the problem is that you have to think of your phone as just a another email client or web client.
Unless you are using Exchagne there isn't any way to properly "sync" the way you want to both Outlook and your phone.
so shaun...i have a question then..so there is no way to set my phone up with a pop3 email account..i have comcast.net and ive tried everything humanly possible to set it up to where i can send and receive emails through the phone...im totally confused on how to do this or if it is even possible at all...plz help me out?
I dont use outlook and never will and i've been struggling all week to get email without all the "sinking" problems. I use rcn.com (similar to comcast) so this should work for you:
Under the outlook mail stuff select NEW ACCOUNT. You will get a wizard of some kind . Do all the settings manualy (no automatic setup please). Here I just put in the pop server name (in) and smtp server (out) which i copied from my Mozilla accout setup on my pc. Mine is pop.rcn.com and smtp.rcn.com. Yours should be similar. Try it. It works.
Now the "sink"problem:
Apparently the mail in the Q does an ABSOLUTE sink with the server. That is, NO MATTER WHAT it makes ALL the mail in the Q mail match the server mail- no mail on the server, no mail on the Q!!!. What you downloaded yesterday simply disappears!!! While the Q makes a local copy it treats it as virtual (i.e. it doesnt really exist if the server copy is removed - like from your pc downloading the same mail).
I have more than one computer on the same mail account (mozilla) but one precicely ONE is setup to actually remove the mail from the server. What drove me nuts was the Q worked fine for days UNTIL is looked at the mail on that ONE computer. Then POOF, the next time I did a send recieve on the Q all the mailI thought was local DISAPPEARD (now i understant - it synced with the empty server).
To make this shorter, set ALL computers that use the same mail server to NOT automatically update. ONE can remove the mails from the server when you need to clean up . They will disappear from the Q however. To be safe, move all the mail on the Q that you want to keep on the Qto another folder (i use DRAFTS sine I cannot find out how to create a new folder - darn it)
For extra safety I made a new mail account with my provider that ONLY the Q knows about. I then forward the desired messages to that account (from Q to the network to the Q) Waht a stupid way to copy but it works.
Sorry for the long answer, but I sepnt hours thios week figuring this out. Maybe if I was a corporate beanie and used Outlook/exchange server i would be less frustrated. But ....
I had even more fun before i understood the issues. Initially i setup the Q to check every 5 minutes for new mail. Then I did a backup. Then i dicovered the vanishing mail problem. The fun part was when i dis a mail restore sometimes it would be back , other times it would disappear. The restore program set the Q mail back to auto-update. In that While it restored the mail it would last just until i did the next connect and poof. Fun and games.
BTW if you want to save your contacts copy the file pim.vol to somewhere else. The same trick doesnt work for the cmail.vol file since it appears to be locked.
I use outlook on my desktop and want to get all of my contacts onto my new moto Q? Can you describe how to do this. I am getting my outlook email but not contacts!
I have set my Q up with a POP3 accont.
When I SEND/RECV, all emails on my server come in to the POP folder on the Q, but are not removed from the server. So later, when I SEND/RECV on my desktop, they all come in to my Outlook folers. Then when I plug in the sync cable, whatever emails I have deleted from the Q are automatically deleted from my Outlook In Box. Also, all my Outlook folders are synced into the "Outlook Email" account on the Q. Furthermore, whatever I delete from the desktop is automatically deleted from the Q.
It all works verywell for me.
my carrier is USCellular, and the hone came with the "Outlook Email" account aready there.

When you upgrade the firmware the updater does a hard reset. Afterwards it's up to you to set all of your settings back, re-install 3rd party applications and re-configure e-mail accounts.
