After the Moto Q was left on overnight, the battery went dead because the charger wasn't plugged in.
The battery was dead, way dead. So despite plugging the Q back, it still would not turn on. I was set to take it back to the store that night.
Here's where the discovery occured, after leaving the Q connected to the charger for about 4 hours, it finally beeped then started showing the charging battery screen.
Deep sigh of relief, an hour or so later then phone could be turned on and not even a reset was needed.
Since then has happened again, though this time a USB charger and the same method worked.
Hopefully this will save some others from having to reset or replace their Q just because the battery ran down and died.
Yeah, if you run the battery till the very end sometimes it doesn't show any signs of life until later, way later when it has enough power to show that its being powered. Happens to a lot of phones and devices. Thanks for the heads up!
My Q recently ran out of battery because I forgot to charge it and the power was out due to a storm, so I ended up using the phone till it died. Now when I finally got to charge it again, the charge screen shows up when plugged in but now when i went to go power it on, it wont go past the Verizon Wireless startup screen?
any suggestions?
I took it to the store and they had no clue, they just wanted to send me another one..
This is an issue that was fixed after the new software update. It requires a master reset, and it could not be done with the old firmware without going into a menu, which you can't do.
If you have the new software, you can hold the select button (the one in the center of the DPad) while powering on. This should give you a menu with a restore option. I think this is the key combination... can anyone else confirm?
Okay, I'm sure there are a bunch of people out there that have had this issue (god knows I've seen them), so I called VZW to complain about my Q acting up, and I finally received a solution that sounds like it might work (this is only for those of us that do NOT use Exchange ActiveSync). I will try to recreate it in a step-by-step process and give the explaination I was given at the end:
(*) DISABLE WirelessSync (both Push/ReadySync) BEFORE starting this process
(my bad for forgetting it until now...
(1) Start -> Active Sync
(2) Menu -> Add Server Source
(3) Type in some random characters (does'nt matter). Push Next.
(4) Radom character for User Name, Pasword, Domain. Push Next.
(5) Uncheck all boxes (not sure if this is necessary). Push Finish.
(6) Menu -> Schedule. Modify everything to "Manually", uncheck both checkboxes. Push Done.
(7) Menu -> Options. Highlight Exchange Server. Menu -> Delete. Push Yes.
(8) Home -> Start -> System Tools -> Task Manager -> Menu -> Kill All (remove any residual processes)
So what did we learn in class today? Microsoft has let it leak that they screwed up the default distribution of the WM 5.0 Smartphone by setting the default times to check the exchange server every 10 min during peak times, every 4 hours during off-peak times. However, if no server is setup, it's not smart enough to not do anything, it just tries to connect to "nothing" (hence the "little PDA" in the upper right hand corner every 10 min.. you will still have some of it due to WirelessSync if you use it, but shouldn't be so regular). And it tries to connect to nothing every 10 minutes. I asked the VZW representative why there hasn't been an announcement or something to that effect informing uses and he said it's a Microsoft problem that even exists on the Dell Axim's and VZW's only telling people as they complain about it.
He said that many technicians are attirbuting this not only to the infrequent (I guess 1 - 3 times a day is considered "infrequent" to them) lockups, but poor battery performance.
This may be the same as the master reset option. But not knowing if there are any ramifications to that, I wasn't brave enough to try it. However...
When I woke up this morning I had a battery icon with an X on it. I had had it plugged in all night to my desktop computer to charge it. (It's always worked before). I tried to get this indicator off and had to reboot the phone. That came back up with an "!" battery indicator. Still would not charge. SO I once again powered it off and removed the battery for about 10 seconds. Then replaced the battery and restarted the phone. When it came up this time it appeared normal. I plugged it in and it's charging now.
Not sure if this works in all situations, but it sure worked for me.

Yeah this key combinatoin works. I had to do it when my Q locked up and wouldn't boot. You end up losing everything the internal memory. I"m not sure if it clears your miniSD i didn't have one installed at the time.
Has anyone used any of those batteries with higher charge ratings? The default extended battery has a rating of 1640mAh. I was thinking of getting the 3600mAh or higher if i could find one, but wanted to know they stand up.
Ok, so my problem is my phone completely died on me and i couldn't find my charger but i had my USB. so i used my computer to charge it. I only charged it half way because i was in a rush. When it died later (i had my wall charger at that point) i began charging it, well about 30 min. Later i turned it on for missed calls etc. but the problem was is that it wouldn't go past the Verizon start up screen. Did charging it on my computer mess it up?
