Well, I've gotten the phone into flash mode and tried to update it, but it doesn't work well. It will only get between 8 and 20 % done and then it says that it fails.

For some reason, I got it to work. One problem, though. To get the update to work, I had to use the Verizon network update. Does anyone know of a way to flash back to an Alltel firmware?

Found a new way...

Okay... So I got a Q just a few weeks ago and it's already froze on me. I like the phone a lot (while it worked anyway), so I figured I would try my best to get it to work. I bought it off good 'ol Ebay and it's the sprint version of the Q, but it has Verizon as the carrier, so they wouldn't service it. I came to hellomotoq.com to look for some help, and got some. These are the steps I used to fix my phone.

First you will need the files found here. Remember the update/Firmware is for Verizon. You should be able to do the same thing with any other carrier, just go to Motorola's website for the firmware that corresponds with your carrier.

---- Warning ----
This will reformat your Moto Q. ALL ORIGINAL DATA WILL BE LOST.
------------------

Step 1.
Boot your Q in USB mode by pressing and holding A & Enter while plugging in the Moto Q.

Step 2.
Run SDL in \RSD Lite.

Step 3.
Load your update (for Verizon it's found in \update\Firmwares\VRZ_Q2_C_06.47.05I_01.0A.00R_MON STER_01.sbf

Your Q will go through the steps to reload your firmware.

Frozen Q/make sure battery is charged

Just got a new 9c on Saturday and by Monday morning I was experiencing the "freeze at the Motorola icon" syndrome. I tried the boot using the center key but it didn't work. Finally when it didn't come on at all I realized it might be due to low battery even though it was fully charged the last time I checked. I charged it using the wall charger (USB won't work if the battery is too low) and lo and behold it worked.

Frozen Q Procedure did not Work

Dale, this did not work for me. The first time this happened was when I plugged my phone into my computer. Then after about an hour the Motorola Flash Mode came up. It won't even charge the battery anymore. I had another battery that allows me to connect to my computer and try to download the Motorola Software but it does not do anything. My computer does not even recognize that the phone is hooked up. Help if you can!!

Bob

Motorola offers repair service directly. I would contact them and see if they will warranty it. It is obviously less then 1 yr. old, so maybe.

There is one other thing you can try. Download the Moto update, install on the PC. Then try to install. It will most likely fail as the Q won't boot, so try this; putting the Q in flash mode..... some of this is for solving another problem, but if you force a firmware upgrade you should be good:

Keep the phone hooked up with the USB cable.
Go into device manager, Right click on "motorola Flash Interface" with yellow ! mark on it and click Uninstall. (you may not have this, if you never installed the previous update)

*Unplug the phone
* turn the phone off
*Put it in Flash Mode: Press and hold A and Enter at the same time
while inserting the USB cable.
* phone should turn on in flash mode.

*It will then ask you to install Motorola Flash Interface.
Continue with the installation... You might get the Yellow ! mark again in device manager, (Dont worry!)
*uninstall it again
*Unplug Q
*Hook it up again. (Keep phone in flash mode)
*The Motorola Flash interface should now install properly.

*Then Open motorola software update tool
and Pick Verizon as your service provider and Q as the device.

Follow the instructions to start upgrade..

I feel for all of you. I have had my q9c for over a year, and it has been nothing but trouble. I love what it does, it just does not do it very well.

If I try to link up with bluetooth, the phone locks up for 3 minutes. Try to open a pdf or word doc that is over 1mb...good luck. And please god, don't shut the thing off. You will be lucky if it will turn back on in the same day.

I cleaned up all my text folders and call folders this morning. Just to be safe, i wanted to reboot the phone to be sure everything dumped out. Well, that was at 1000hrs. It is now 1537 and it still wont turn on.

I tried the z-e thing, the center button thing, and just about everything else recommended on this site. No dice. I can guarantee you that i will never buy another moto smart phone.
