Fixing the frozen Q

There have been a few of you who experienced the Motorola Q freezing at the Verizon logo during startup. Well we got a fix thanks to alphadog! Just as a warning this will reformat the Q, but it should be worth the fact that you can use you Q again instead of looking at the Verizon logo all the time .

Motorola offers repair service directly. I would contact them and see if they will warranty it. It is obviously less then 1 yr. old, so maybe.

There is one other thing you can try. Download the Moto update, install on the PC. Then try to install. It will most likely fail as the Q won't boot, so try this; putting the Q in flash mode..... some of this is for solving another problem, but if you force a firmware upgrade you should be good:

Keep the phone hooked up with the USB cable.
Go into device manager, Right click on "motorola Flash Interface" with yellow ! mark on it and click Uninstall. (you may not have this, if you never installed the previous update)

*Unplug the phone
* turn the phone off
*Put it in Flash Mode: Press and hold A and Enter at the same time
while inserting the USB cable.
* phone should turn on in flash mode.

*It will then ask you to install Motorola Flash Interface.
Continue with the installation... You might get the Yellow ! mark again in device manager, (Dont worry!)
*uninstall it again
*Unplug Q
*Hook it up again. (Keep phone in flash mode)
*The Motorola Flash interface should now install properly.

*Then Open motorola software update tool
and Pick Verizon as your service provider and Q as the device.

Follow the instructions to start upgrade..

I had this happen to my Q yesterday ... very disconcerning when you're out of town and your world of contacts, etc. is stored there. My own fault as I was diddling around with the Registry. Fortunately, after two calls to VZW tech, I was given a couple of suggestions (which worked).

First, the tech immediately offered to FedEx a replacement phone to me where I am staying, since the phone was onlyooting a month old. Nice!

In troubleshooting the problem, tech dude then suggested taking the battery out of the phone and letting it sit for a minute or so. Then turn on the unit by pressing the red button for 2-3 seconds to see if the VZW insignea comes on and cycles to Windows Mobile, etc. If not, dude said to plug phone into recharger for an hour, then try the power-up.

We did not get into syncing with PC or other measures. After the hour of charging, the unit booted up just fine.

Not sure if there is a work around. But I would try the steps that jefffree took to get his Q booting up again. And if that doesn't work, I would take it back to your service provider and tell them what's up. They should be kind enough to replace your Q as it may be a defective one.

Also noteworthy... I've ordered 6 Motorola Q's. My wife & I both have one. I noticed many times that the USB cable that came with our Q's (both of ours) doesn't allow Windows to see the Q (with OR without the box checked in USB to PC connections).

One time I was having this issue, I decided to try and use the USB cable that came with my old blackberry 7510 (iDEN technology). Windows immediately recognized the hardware. Plugged it back in with the *true* motorola Q usb cable - nothing. Hmmmm...

Then my sister-in-law ordered a Q. I had it sent here to get things all up & up for her (software installs, yada yada). The morning I was ready to ship it off to her I powered it up and noticed the Sprint screen stayed on for a VERY VERY long period of time. Then it went to "Motorola Flash Mode" and was telling me to connect the usb cable. I did so and it simply change to "usb cable connected." Windows wouldn't recognize the Q when plugged in & I couldn't get the Q out of this "Motorola Flash Mode." Pulling the battery, force off & on... nothing.

Motorola said it'll probably have to be replaced - but I had to call Sprint (still within the 30 day window). I called Sprint, they said it had to be replaced (after trying what I already had). They set me up for a return shipping label and instructed me to order a new one in the mean time.

I thought back to the Blackberry USB cable experience and thought, "What the heck? Why not try it?" As soon as I plugged that blackberry usb cable into my Q & into my computer, windows said, "NEW HARDWARE FOUND" and made it's little recognition noise. I downloaded Motorola's update software and the Q started updating. Afterwards it booted to the start screen. I loaded the Sprite Backup file I made the night before and it was back to how I had it. No problems since.

Personally, I think there's something fishy about the USB cables that come with the Q.

I have a Q (build date 3506) and it is frozen on the Verizon boot screen. I have repaired these before using the software update but this one is different. It begins the update and progress goes to 16% then the phone reboots into a Ram Downloader screen and although I can hear the "doorbell" from my pc indicating connection the update never "sees" the phone again and stalls out. I have attempted this over and over.

Also, my laptop has an older version of the "fix" from Motorola for this issue and it will not even attempt to install on this phone. This is the update I used in the past to correct three other phones.

Help?????
