It is not user error. This happens when it hangs. If it happens a lot take it back to Alltel and get another one.
I have the same problem, usually when i use tele-nav then answer a call, when i o back to tele-nav it just freezes where it was. IF I try to go to the task manager it won't respond to that either.
Is there any way to add RAM to this phone or is this just "thecost of doing business"?
Has anyone dealt with Motorola directly regarding this issue? I have had this happened several times since I purchased the phone in Feb. The 30 warranty was up with Sprint so I contacted Motorola. They gave me the same method ( master reset ) but that's obviously not possible when the phone cannot be powered on or off.
When I first got my 9c everything seemed perfect. After I ran ActiveSync and tried to sync the phone to my computer I had the same lock up problem that you had. I contacted Sprint and they told me that there was nothing I could do with my 3 day old phone except to take it back to the Sprint store and replace it.
It took me about 10 minutes or less of on-line search to find out how to do a Master Reset which filxed the problem. Of course, now my settings and data were lost and had to be re-input.
This happened to me a total of about 3 times even though I've yet to try to sync with my computere again.
It happend to my wife's 9c so many times after her first sync that she called Motorola. The guy in Indoa, who's English was about as bad as it gets, told her to pack up the phone and send it in to Motorola to be repaird. The repair would take about 6 weeks and if they couldn't fix it they'd send her a referb to repalce it. She ended up taking it back to the Sprint store and getting another NEW phone. She also hasn't tried to sync since.
Our 30 day return warranty is up on Monday and we fully intend to try to sync and do anything else that we can think of that constitutes normal use. If it doesn't pass we've decided to reactivate our old phones and get our money back.
I should say that we like the 9c better than anything we've ever used when it works. The problem is that in the past 25 days we've had more issues than we've had with any other phone.
Have you been to the Motorola website to see if there are any updates for your phone? If there is an update keep in mind that a Hard Reset is part of the update process.
I'm glad I came across this thread. My wife just got a brand new 9c a few days ago and three times now the device has seemed to lock up, not responding to any input. I'm not sure if it powers itself or is stuck in standby mode (the screen stays black), but the only way to get it working again seems to be by removing the battery and putting it back in. She's had to do this three times now. What is this I was reading about a master reset? And did someone mention that this problem originates from active syncing? I'm trying to find out what's causing this phone because I'd like to get one too, but not if I'll have to constantly remove/replace the battery to get it working.

I got my 9c (sprint) and after about a week it would black screen and freeze and require a factory reset. I talked to sprint and then Motorola, both confirmed that this is a known issue in about 2% of the 9's. They suggested waiting for an update that had no release date yet or returning or exchanging the phone. I took mine back to the sprint store and they exchanged it. No problems on the new one.
