Registry - Changing maximum headset volume

For those of you who are dissatisfied with the maximum listening volume while using a wired stereo headset, here is a solution to adjust the headset audio base gain using the registry. Note that this will not affect Bluetooth headsets, nor will it affect onboard speaker volume.

Navigate to
HKLM/Software/Motorola/BPCTRLR/WaveDev/BaseGains

Locate DWORD Value StereoHdstPathGain

A larger number will specify a higher gain. The system must be rebooted for changes to take effect. For me, the optimum value is 10, but I would recommend raising in single steps above the default to avoid damaging equipment (or your ears). An OS reinstall will most likely revert this setting, so you may have to change it again if you update.

HKLM is short for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Once you are in the registry editor, understanding these abbreviations will be pretty intuitive.

Interesting other keys in that hive. . .

Looks like speaker and mic gains are available for all the audio input/output devices.

Wow, and I'll be damned if that does work too!! I turned the BluetoothPath gain up to 5 (default is zero) and make a test call to voice mail, wow--HUGE difference.

This hive may the savior to a lot of unhappy bluetooth users.

Thanks

I'm glad the value changes are effective for Bluetooth as well - I had assumed that other values (including Bluetooth and mic gains) would already be set to the optimum.

If changing the Bluetooth values makes a difference, more power to you. I don't use a Bluetooth headset, so I would have no idea. In terms of power, I don't know what the circuitry is rated for - hopefully nothing will be damaged with a gain increase.

Post a reply here if you determine the effect of an OS or other S/W update on the tweaks. Since they are specified as H/W values in the reg, they might be left alone.

The circuity has to be able to handle. Think about the times when someone yells something to you, it handles it fine.

Thanks for this find. I've been looking for a way to turn the volume down lower than the default minimum on my bluetooth and wired headsets.

Sorry but I don't understand programming and I can't seem to figure this out even though the answer is probably very obvious BUT how would I go about adjusting just the regular volume on the phone. If it could be just a little bit louder that would be great because I use it as a mini boom box.
