I work in the Technology Sector. As I get to know the Q phone more, I will do some more experimenting.
Quick side note, I currently use my MOTOQ to access my home SageTV PVR via Internet using SSL. The PVR has Apache Server SSL running. I use IE on the Q to access this PVR and check the recording status, look up the EPG, and to schedule recordings.
This last feature is very important since I am traveling a lot.
Previously, I used a Treo 650 to access my home PVR via browser, which was painful because it was slow and the Treo had problems with memory, which required me to turn off graphics. After buying the Q, I threw the Treo up on eBay and sold it within 3 hours.
The Q is great. When comparing it to the Treo, there are some things that the Treo does better. If a person has never used the Treo, then this will not be an issue. For the new SmartPhone user, the Q is like a phone sent from Heaven.
My complaint about the Q is that it looks and feels very fragile. Having a skin cover is almost a necessity. My Q is currently condomless, but it sits in the sideways case that I bought from Verizon Wireless store. The phone is so light that if you put it in your shirt pocket, then you forget it is there.
Just don’t bend over to pickup something, otherwise the Q will slide right out of your pocket. The Treo was so bulky with its skin cover that it sometimes didn’t fit properly in some shirt pockets. Not with the Q. Although the Treo never slipped out of my shirt pockets.
I do suspect that this problem will go away if you have a skin cover which will cause the Q to grip the inside of the shirt pocket.
As the traveling slows down, I plan on looking into Remote Terminal options and will implement something so that I can access my home network through the Q.
I came across the following links that I thought were interesting reading
Research In Motion (RIM) Maker of the Blackberry Market Analysis (May 2006) Financial and Market Report that mentions the Verizon and Moto Q kickoff http://www.intergovworld.com/downloads/rim.pdf
I purchased the extended battery from Verizon. This battery requires the usage of the included extended battery cover. Adding both items causes the thickness of the phone to extended beyond the form factor of the Boxwave Skin. If not for the extended battery cover, I would have purchased the skin awhile back.
A few more things to add to my earlier post.
I have a buddy that purchased the Moto Q. He also purchased the Slingbox and the Moto Q Slingbox client software. He says that it works great with occassional choppiness on the video.
I have had some time to evaluate the Moto Q. I have the Goodlink software running on it so that I can get my Exchange Email from work.
I also have the Pocket Outlook setup to poll my sbcglobal.net POP3 Email once every 5 minutes.
Once in a while, the phone will lock up. Normally this occurs when Pocket Internet Explorer is running and I end up at a problem website that Pocket IE doesn't like.
Also, because Goodlink is constantly monitoring the Goodlink server behind my company's firewall, it is another Process that is always running.
During those times when Goodlink is polling the Goodlink Server, Pocket Outlook is polling the POP3 Email Server, and I am either on the phone or surfing on Pocket IE, then an occassional lockup will occur.
For sure Pocket IE has been a problem. It locked up earlier when I went to a website, then hit the back button, then hit the stop button. Pocket IE hung. I went to the Task Manager to kill the IE session, which was of no avail. I had to power cycle the phone.
I believe that WM2005 is a more CPU intensive PDA OS, which may play into this.
I also have an iPAQ hx2790 running WM2005 and iGuidance v2.1.3 GPS Navigation software and a Bluetooth GPS receiver.
I have an iPAQ 3970 running PPC2002 and iGuidance 2.1 GPS software with a Bluetooth GPS receiver.
The iPAQ 3970 with PPC2002 is much quicker at calculating routes than the iPAQ 2790 running WM2005.
When you launch the File Explorer in WM2005, you see a Documents and Settings directory just like in XP. Makes me wonder if there are a lot of wonderful processes running, which add to the overhead.
Aside from the griping, I still love the Moto Q. Nuff said.
I travel alot within the USA. I have been using PC/PDA GPS guidance for the past 2 years.
I am a fan of iGuidance. I started with Routis 2004, then discovered iGuidance 2.0. I am currently using iGuidance 3.0, the best version so far.
My current setup is an HP iPAQ 2790 with 4GB SD Card and Pharos iGPS-500 SiRF III GPS Receiver(Bluetooth Dock and CF Adapter). The 4GB SD Card has full install of Canada and 49 US States. I don't have Hawaii installed.
I have been using PC/PDA GPS guidance for the past 2 years.
I have owned the Q phone for about 8 weeks now. I am running the Goodlink Push Mail client software on it, which does add CPU overhead. As I am composing this email, my Q phone rang with an incoming call, which I attempted to answer. The Dialer program that handles the phone functions locked up with a frozen Call Status screen. I had to pull the battery out to reboot the phone.
I like the Q phone, but I would never put GPS software on it for a few reasons.
1. I am not a fan of putting GPS Navigational software onto the phone. 2. I feel that running GPS on the Q will result in lockups and manual reboots. 3. The screen on the Q is too small.
Point #1 When I travel, I need to look at the phone for visual, especially when there is an off or on ramp or a major highway artery that I need to navigate. I have had occasions when I needed to call Airlines to get on a flight that is taking off in a couple of hours. This second function may involve calling multiple airlines, which may cause me to make many phone calls. Mixing the two is a recipe for something to go wrong.
Point #2 I have GoodLink and the Q Outlook POP3 Email client running. Just those two applications alone put a load on the phone's tiny CPU. I have had occasional lockups. Running any GPS software that is very CPU intensive will just add to this and will result in phone lockup and phone reboots to unlock.
Point #3 iGuidance has some statistical information on the bottom of the screen. It is hard enough reading this on a PDA or laptop. The Q screen is the size of an iPOD Video screen, which will be much harder to read especially when you are behind the wheel of a car.
I have never been a fan of an All in One device. An All in One device has one point of failure, the device itself. If you are GPS Navigating yourself and are on a narrow timeline, and you make a phone call, then the phone and GPS lock up, then you are SOL. You have to reboot the Q, wait a minute for initialization, launch iGuidance, wait for it to lock in on Satellites which could take minutes if you are driving, then you have to re-input the destination information.
I use the Q phone as a Phone, Exchange Email client, Exchange Calendar client, Exchange Notes client, and as a POP3 Email client.
I leave the GPS functionality for a separate PDA.
In fact, I have turned on 6 co-workers to PDA GPS Navigation. Two co-workers tried the Smartphone GPS.
First one uses Treo 650 with whatever GPS Palm Navigation software. Goodlink Push client is installed. He has problems with slowness.
Second Smartphone user, he uses a WM2005 Smartphone. Possibly Samsung. He says that it is very slow when Bluetooth is turned on. Most Smartphone GPS users will use Bluetooth GPS Receiver.
Other users, keep the GPS on their PDA separate from the phone. They don't have problems.
Another reason, iGuidance requires a touchscreen or a mouse, which the Q lacks both.
Until I installed the UPDATES on my Q - I had never been able to use my email in OUTLOOK
On my Main Screen I also have the option to view both email in Outlook and POP3.
When looking at the POP3 it shows that I have (2) unread messages.
When I click on the POP3 nothing happens...that POP3 link is frozen
Everything Else is working...that I know of with the exception of that POP3 link.
The issue with the Q being fragile is a very common issue. I cant tell all of you enough that the Rhino case from Speck Products will turn your Q into a tank! I have dropped my Q on my carport (do a lot of home auto work) several times and to this point, no damage. Its a bit bulky and is made from rubber which grabs on to the inside of your pockets but its hands down the best ive had. Regular silicone skins dont come close to the protection the Rhino offers. Hope I help a couple of clumsy people out by spreading the word
i hate the moto q. it sucks. another way for microsot to give out crap software, and charge top dollar.
why would anybody want a phone that freezes? i wish i could run Linux on it, I KNOW LINUX WOULD RUN WAYYYYYYYYYY BETTER THAN THIS CRAP. a total dissapointment. WINDOWS SUCKS NO MATTER WHAT. WINDOWS MOBILE, WINDOWS XP, WINDOWS MOBILE.
WOULD APPLE OR LINUX PLEASE SAVE US!!!!
i really hate this phone.
it basically has no memory, it uses a mini sd card, when every other piece of electronic crap in my house uses MICRO or JUST SD, or even sony's scam of a memory card pro duo. motorola must have some kinda conspiracy with the makers of mini sd cars.
why is it that everybody wants to use their own memory card tyes? do they think we are made of money?
but anyways, besides the moto being a complete waste of money, motorola made a very durable phone. i threw my girls moto up against the wall as hard as i could, and the only thing that happened, was the battery fell out. i even threw the battery against the wall. but the phone still works, i even use a hacked version of PDAnet to tether to the internet with it. thats right. HACKED.

Reason: I PUT MINI SD TWICE
Omg. I Totally Forgot About The Worst Camera On A $200-$300 Device I Have Ever Seen.
The Whole Camera Is Slow, The Task Manager Kill Function Doesnt Work Properly.
Oh Yeah, Half The Time It Doesn't Want To Charge, It Will Die Without Warning. I Might Have To Plug/unplug The Phone About 10 Times Before I Can Get It To Realize It's Been Plugged Up.
I Dont Really Have Anything Positive To Say Aout This Phone Except That It Is A Phone, And It Does Dial Numbers, And It's Looks Expensive. 9 Suppose Like A Replica Lamborgini. Looks Great, But Runs Like Crap
