How to install Opera Mini 4.1 on your Moto Q

The IBM Java MIDP20 appears to be unavailable. I am looking for a free (and legal) alternative.

Installing Opera Mini 4.0 is no easy task. Hopefully the instructions below will help.

Download IBM Java MIDP20.
  1. Using your favorite internet browser on your PC browse to Trial download: WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment 6.1.1*
  2. Complete the required registration.
  3. Download ibm-weme-wm50-sp-arm-midp20_6.1.1.20061110-161633.exe from the section, CLDC 1.1/MIDP 2.0 for Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone Edition/ARM.
*The IBM website may need the Java Runtime Environment to display properly. If you don't have it then download it free from java.com: Hot Games, Cool Apps.
Install IBM Java MIDP20.

On your PC:
  1. Install the program on your PC choosing all of the defaults.
  2. Right-click your desktop and choose new then folder. Leave the name New Folder.
  3. Browse your PC to C:\Program Files\IBM\WEME\runtimes\61\wm50-arm-sp-midp20.
  4. Open weme-wm50-sp-arm-midp20_6.1.1.20061110-161633.zip and extract the contents to the new folder on the desktop you created. Make sure you keep the file and folder structure intact.
On your Phone:
  1. Open File Manager.
  2. Press Menu, File then New Folder.
  3. Name the folder J9.
  4. Open the new J9 folder.
  5. Press Menu, File then New Folder.
  6. Name the folder MIDP20.
  7. Open the new MIDP20 folder.
  8. Close File Manager.
Back to your PC:
  1. Open the New Folder on the Desktop.
  2. Select all of files you extracted earlier and choose copy.
  3. Explore your device using ActiveSync.
  4. Browse to \J9\MIDP20.
  5. Paste the extracted files and folders from the New Folder on the desktop into \J9\MIDP20
Install Opera Mini.

Back to your phone:
  1. Open File Manager.
  2. Browse to \J9\MIDP20\bin.
  3. Open emulator.exe.
  4. Press install.
  5. The URL you want to enter is: http ://mini.opera.com/download-4/opera-mini-latest-advanced-int.jad (Extra space added between http and :// so the link would show here.
  6. Follow the on screen proimpts to install the Opra Mini program (agree to install the program, agree to run the program, agree to the End User License Agreement, etc.).
Running the program.
  1. Open File Manager.
  2. Browse to \J9\MIDP20\bin.
  3. Open emulator.exe.
  4. Opera Mini will appear in the list.
The next part is important. I learned it the hard way!
The Opera Mini install puts two folders, recordStores and temp, in \My Documents. Leave these files and folders alone. If you delete them you will effectively uninstall Opera Mini and you will need to reinstall it.
The links on this page may get out of date. Don't panic. Shoot me an e-mail or Private Message and I'll fix them as quick as I can.

Are you absolutely sure it won't work under Jbed? So far, all Smartphones and Pocket PC's have been supported by Jbed.

See the sticky thread The Symbian/Windows Mobile MIDlet (Java) Bible - by Menneisyys - Opera Mini - Opera Community at the official Opera Mini forum for more info.

Welcome to the forums!

I have no idea what Jbed is. If there is a better way then what I have described above then by all means post it.

Opera Mini is a Java based web browser. The Q doesn't have Java so you need a Java emulator. It shouldn't mess up your phone.

I've been trying it out today. It's pretty cool. It has the support for Java that I've been missing but with no Flash for the Q (or any Windows Smartphone) it's still not as good as browsing the web on my PC.

nice instructions mtg1974, you should have seen how long it took me a few months ago to do all that without using a PC.

when I try to download the software in step one it says that java scripting is disabled. I use internet explorer for a browser. Is there a way to enable java scripting?

Are you downloading the program on your PC or your phone? You need to download it on your PC. Does your PC have Java installed? If not get it at java.com: Hot Games, Cool Apps.

Also, I used the http download instead of the download manager.
