It's the question of all questions for the Motorola Q. How do you add or install custom ringtones to your Q? It's real simple actually. First you need to know what you want to put on. Just make sure that it is in MP3 or WMA format. If you are solely using the song as a ringtone I would recommend pulling the bitrate down to about 96 Kbps and cutting the song to your favorite part (i.e. the chorus). This is so that you can save space as well as play only the part of the song that you want. If you don't have access to audio editing software like CoolEdit or Adobe Audition. It's okay if you just use the file as is. Sorry folks iTunes files are usually mp4 and are encrypted so they wont work.
I'm sure you've all seen the Verizon Wireless/Nelly Furtado commerical and it's probably the reason why you wanted to add a custom ringtone in the first place. For that reason I've attached a test WMA ringtone that you could use and guess what it is? Yep. Nelly Furtado's Promiscuous. And as far as legalities go, I simply downloaded a WMA preview from a music website.
So here is what you do.
Connect your Motorola Q to your desktop PC running ActiveSync.
Click on Explore
Navigate to: My Windows Mobile-Based Device\Application Data\Sounds
Drag and Drop the WMA or MP3 file in question (hit okay when you see thr prompt).
Now, on your Motorola Q, hit Start>Settings>Sounds
Press in on Ring tone to pull up the list.
Your recently uploaded MP3 or WMA should be in the list. Select it and hit done.
Hit done one more time to confirm your selection.
Now call your phone and try it out!
If you want to change your alarm or e-mail/text message sound, your song or sound needs to be in WAV format. Download a wav file and any sound effects website and place it in the same folder as shown above. Voila!
Let me know if there needs to be any clairification. That's what were here for!
UPDATE:
Some users with the new Q9 phones have noticed that there is a limit to the size file that can be used as a ringtone. To increase the size limit you will need to edit the registry (Do this at your own risk). I prefer PHM Registry editor and I have provided a link to the program, instructions for installing it and an example of how to use it here.
Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds
Edit the Value, FileSizeLimit. The default Value data is 307200. Change it to 900000.
I checked my Q and it does not have the value so again, this update is for users with a new Q9.
Also saw that a Voice Recording can be made to be a ringtone... not that I'd want MY voice as a ringtone. (hehe) I can forsee my 11 year old daughter finding this feature, though, and changing it secretly with her voice.

In my Q explorations, I haven't come across this feature. Where do you find it on the phone?
If you guys need to edit some audio files, and don't feel like paying the big bucks for those two programs. Give Audacity a try. Its open source, free, and its perfect for this kind of thing, and really even for general audio editing.

Nick is very right about this comment. I only stated those two programs because I have them, but you are more than welcome to use any program that suits your fancy (especially free ones!).
