I'm thinking not so much right? does anyone have an idea? if it's not much then I think I can deal with paying the $20/month to use the outlook in the Q...
However...
if I do THAT, is there a way to set up the Q to check for e-mail every 3 or 5 mins?
I messed with one at the mall and didn't find that option... granted I've had my samsung a920 for almost a year now and every once and a while I ALMOST find new stuff about it... Almost...
I think that if I could manage to do just that, then I would have no problem setting up a new hotmail or gmail account JUST for my "text" messaging...
OR
Does anyone know the rates for sending MMS to an international phone number?
the way we currently text is she sends short e-mails to MY international cell number but I have to send them to her phones e-mail... Man I wish I had DoCoMo... The phones they offer are kick ass!
if I do THAT, is there a way to set up the Q to check for e-mail every 3 or 5 mins?
In the next to the last screen of the email setup you can set the Q to check for messages every 15 minutes, half hour, hour, etc. 15 minutes is the minimum.
First let's cover the picture sending question... (assuming you have the $19.99 35MB data plan)
The Motorola Q ,in it's original high resolution setting, is around - 225kb
Short email, around 160 charaters, and a signature ------------ 1 or 2 kb
So you could then send around 5 "picture emails" a day. Assuming that's all you did (data) with your Q.
International Text Messaging...
Though I've always heard it mentioned by any rep that they do not , I understand certain phones can text internationally from Qwest. Not really to sure, as I don't use that either. Try a sample text from a Q phone at their "Solution Center".
Now lets cover the push..,
You must have access to an exchange server.
To set up push press start menu, programs, active sync, then configure server. At this point you'll type something like http: //company. mail.com (without spaces). Type in login info and then domain (ad). If it's your work email you will generally be asked to set up a password for security. There is no fee to set it up, just the data it uses. I recommend only retreiving headers ususally about 3kb and then only reading pertinent emails by downloading rest of message.
Geeze, the fireworks here in Seattle were amazing! Hope yours was great as well!
Well... I'm almost sold on the Q... If I could just disable standard text messaging some how... And figure a way to push gmail or hotmail or some other free email service to it... hm... Any ideas?
As for the international text messaging... That's just a "what if" for my current phone... the samsung a920... If I get the Q I won't need that, as I can send a significantly longer-than-sms message via e-mail... So IF I get the Q that won't be a problem...
JSYK... According to the crap load of websites... It is possible to send an SMS and MMS to international phones as long as you have the country code setup, just as if you were calling them (ie... +01-555-555-5555)... Or something like that... I haven't actually tried it because I'm afraid it might cost a crap load...
Anyway...
You know if gmail can push? I can set it up to send me a text message everytime I get an e-mail... but that's such a hastle... and then of course I'd have to pay for SMS if I received them on this phone... or wait?
Does it cost anything to receive SMS messages... Just how much to receive them?
Thanks so much for taking time out to answer all these questions... it's really nice of you...
I live in Tucson AZ... Due to fire codes and all that... Fireworks are illegal here... The city puts on a show... But it's nothing compared to Obon festivals in Japan :P
No problem... we all start somewhere. I came to this forum (one of the best so far!) to try and help people, and I really enjoy learning and sharing.
Gmail Push...As far as I can tell there is no "push" available for a pop3 like Gmail. Try and "google" it. The best your gonna get with the Q is check every 15min for new messages (the 6700 can sync every minute). You could also just hit send receicve at any point to see if there are any new messages. There are many great resources on the topic of how to set up any pop3 email.
Qwest Text Messaging Maximum $15 charge per month. 5 cents per incoming/outgoing message. So if you did 2 texts, you would pay .10 or if you did 1500 texts you'd pay the max. Send a couple texts internationally see what happens on your next bill. Not like your getting charged some crazy amount of cash.
I would say, try one out... you have 14 days to see if you like it or not. Half of whether or not you like it is the feel of it, for me anyway. Worst case your out $150 for a couple of days. Though I think their retail stores have it for $99 with 2 year agreement. Though I prefer 1 year agreements, due to the fact that next year there is always something better. And I usually want it !!
