Well actually, if you want to replace that file. You need to make sure that it is not the active profile in use. So goto Setting->Home Screen and change the Home Screen Layout to any other one besides the one you are editing, and then go ahead and upload the modified one.
Actually, scratch that. I have done them one better. When you use the method from the link above, it screws with the spacing on the home screen and looks very sloppy. So I looked at the XML files myself, and did some experimenting. Turns out you can modify the existing plugin instead of inserting the one they suggested. In your .home.xml file, just change "ActiveSync" to the name of the email account you want to display.
If you need detailed instructions, I'll make them as dumb as I can. Here is what you want to do:
1. On your Q, go to Start->Settings->Home Screen, and take note of what layout you are currently using. For this example, let's say you are using the Sprint layout. Now change the layout to anything else.
2. Open the messaging application on your phone, and take note of the account name that you wish to have displayed on the home screen. For this example, let's assume the account name is "Gmail".
3. Connect your Q to your PC and open up ActiveSync. Once ActiveSync is connected, click the "Explore" button to browse the files on your Q.
4. Navigate to the "\Application Data\Home" folder on your Q, and find the .home.xml file that corresponds to the layout you want to use. For this example, the file would be sprint.home.xml.
5. Copy the sprint.home.xml file to your desktop PC, and make a backup of it.
6. Now open the sprint.home.xml file in notepad to edit the contents.
7. Search for all instances of "ActiveSync" and replace them with "Gmail" (or whatever the name of your email account on your Q is).
8. Save the modified sprint.home.xml file and copy it back to the "\Application Data\Home" folder on the Q.
9. Finally, go back to Start->Settings->Home Screen on the Q, and change the layout back to the Sprint layout (or whatever layout you just edited).
Voila! I'm so putting this in the Wiki...
This worked like a charm...thanks for the great info. I have one further issue though. Once this is done, I cannot click on the Email link on the main page when it is highlighted...its just dead. Have to go through the messaging button to get to the email...not a big deal, just curious why..? Any thoughts...?
i hacked the homescreen to display my unread hotmail account. Then i noticed that i wasn't able to edit any of the acct options(how much and how often to download). So now i swiched it to display a different account. However the new account can stil be edited, and i'm still stuck with a hotmail account that i'm not using. How can i delete the acct? menu>options>account options> will only pull up my other account, not my hotmail. To sum up, how can i delete this account? Also, can we delete the outlook account?
I tried this with Yahoo. In the XML are I replaced "ActiveSync" with "Yahoo!" and like the other person said, on my home screen its just a dead link. Maybe "Yahoo" will work?
The name in the XML file must match the name of the email account, so if the email account includes the ! then removing it from the XML won't help you.
But if your email account is indeed named "Yahoo!" then the ! could be the cause of the problem. It could be an invalid character in the XML. I would rename the account to "Yahoo", make sure the XML matches and see if that helps.
I think I changed it back to "Yahoo!", and the Email option on the home screen went away after rebooting the phone, which I am cool with. I would rather have nothing there than have the Email link go to Outlook. I tried to rename "Yahoo!" in the phone but I cant find an area in the phone where it will allow me to change it to "Yahoo". I am new to forums and I am very very glad they are here, I really like these things.
