making an email account "default"

I don't use outlook and have setup Gmail as my email client. I want the "email" icon on the main screen to show me when I have email, which gets checked automatically every hour. Can I substitute gmail for outlook as the default email?

Actually, scratch that. I have done them one better. When you use the method from the link above, it screws with the spacing on the home screen and looks very sloppy. So I looked at the XML files myself, and did some experimenting. Turns out you can modify the existing plugin instead of inserting the one they suggested. In your .home.xml file, just change "ActiveSync" to the name of the email account you want to display.

If you need detailed instructions, I'll make them as dumb as I can. Here is what you want to do:

1. On your Q, go to Start->Settings->Home Screen, and take note of what layout you are currently using. For this example, let's say you are using the Sprint layout. Now change the layout to anything else.

2. Open the messaging application on your phone, and take note of the account name that you wish to have displayed on the home screen. For this example, let's assume the account name is "Gmail".

3. Connect your Q to your PC and open up ActiveSync. Once ActiveSync is connected, click the "Explore" button to browse the files on your Q.

4. Navigate to the "\Application Data\Home" folder on your Q, and find the .home.xml file that corresponds to the layout you want to use. For this example, the file would be sprint.home.xml.

5. Copy the sprint.home.xml file to your desktop PC, and make a backup of it.

6. Now open the sprint.home.xml file in notepad to edit the contents.

7. Search for all instances of "ActiveSync" and replace them with "Gmail" (or whatever the name of your email account on your Q is).

8. Save the modified sprint.home.xml file and copy it back to the "\Application Data\Home" folder on the Q.

9. Finally, go back to Start->Settings->Home Screen on the Q, and change the layout back to the Sprint layout (or whatever layout you just edited).

Voila! I'm so putting this in the Wiki...

I thought I was there, but when I went to drag the edited file (sprint.home.xml) back to the application/home folder, I got the following error message:

cannot copy sprint.home.xml: access denied.

Make sure your device has sufficient memory, that the file is not set to read only, and that you have permission to copy this file.

Suggestions?

-Pete

Hmm I did not encounter this problem. It did prompt me to ask if I really wanted to overwrite the read only file, but when I clicked "Yes" I was able to do so. Try deleting the original sprint.home.xml file from the Q before you copy the modified one over.

After checking around it seems that if your Q is not application unlocked you may not be able to overwrite the read-only files. But there is a workaround. Copy the sprint.home.xml file to a temporary location on your Q, and then use the folder browser on the Q to cut and paste it to the \Application Data\Home folder. It will give you a warning but should allow you to move the file. Let me know if it works for you.

Thanks- I also tried this, but was not able to overwritre the original sprint.home file. somehow, the only way i finally did it was by deleting the whole home folder and creating a new folder called home, and pasting the new sprint.home in it. Unfourtunately, i dont have a copy of the old contents of the home folder so now i only have one homescreen option. (1)Any way to get them back w/o a hard reset? (2)also can i doctor the color and size of the home screen clock in this way?

Welcome to the forums!

When you come across a file that you cannot delete you need to clear the System and Read-Only attributes.
  1. Select the file in File Manager.
  2. Press Menu then Properties.
  3. Scroll down.
  4. Clear the checkboxes next to Read-Only and System.
  5. Press Done.
Be careful not to delete files that you should not. Here are the basic themes...

Yes, you can edit the xml file and attempt to increase the clock size.
