I have installed and uninstalled to make sure it was not something there.
So with fresh install....after sw is installed and BEFORE phone is connected.
It displays error that outlook client is not available. click ok to get rid of this.
Connect the phone, which detected by the laptop and the phone lights up, you see active sync trying to connect, then fails to detect is displayed; no options to make or break partnerships or any other relationship.
When my Dell PDA used to be connected I could tell to not sync but allow me to transfer data from one unit to the other...that is my goal here.
I no longer use my PDA, uninstalled all of it's software to not have conflicts.
All I want is to be able to connect this phone to my laptop and exchange data manually and not sync it via outlook or any other mail client.
Is it possible?? Should be, if my PDA can connect, why not this thing? Both use Pocket PC/Moblie PC software???
Unlike the Pocket PC the Smartphone does not create a Mobile My Documents folder on the PC for sync. You need a partnership then you click Tools then Explore your device.

That makes sense, but I can't get to tool's then explore, never ets to that point. Tells me my unit is not detected.
My taskbar tells me a motorola phone driver ok...but nothing more.
Sorry for needing kiddie steps, but I'm getting frustrated...I really thought it would be easier.
Seems hard stuff I can fix or hack, but this one is kicking my arse!
I had my stinking FIREWALL set to max, so it would not allow the beast to communicate. Removed it and BAM wide open...NO OUTLOOK needed just like you said.
It did create a folder on my documents like my dell did?? Who knows...it's working, I love it ..I'm happy!
