I was able to get this to work after a little trial and error. I first installed this version of communicator and received the cert error. I then installed the 2007 version and of course the server said that it was not a compatible version.
I then installed the older version of communicator (CommunicatorMobile_SP50.msi) again. It still wouldn't connect. I forgot about it for a couple of hours then went back to it later and it magically started working.
So good news is that it worked.. bad news is that I can't tell you exactly what got it to work.
