I have been looking for the method on how to hook my Moto Q up to my laptop so I can get access to the internet via my Moto Q. I have looked at various forms, tried many combinations of posts, but never had any luck till I phoned Telus Mobility. Well, since I finally got it working I thought I would share the knowledge that the people at Telus passed off to me.
Currently I am using the USB cable that was suppiled with the phone. Since I do not have a Bluetooth adapter on my laptop, I have no intention of using the Bluetooth connection, however telus informed me that you can connect via Bluetooth as well. If your intention is to use Bluetooth give them a call at *611.
I am also using Internet Explorer 7, if you are using a different browser the setup steps may be different.
This is how I got this all working:
1. On your Moto Q open Start > Accessories > Modem Link, then choose Activate. The Moto Q should tell you to replug your USB cable, do it. Wait for your computer to install the appropriate drivers. If the driver does not install you may have to download and install the following driver http://www.hellomotoq.com/forums/downloads/file120.html
2. On your computer open Internet Explorer.
3. In IE choose Tools > Internet Options > Connections.
4. Add a dial up connection.
5. Choose "Dial up to a private network" then next.
6. Select the your phone connection. This is how it looks on my computer yours could be different : Modem - Smartphone Wireless USB Modem #2. Choose Next
7. Enter the Phone Number #777 then choose next.
8. Enter a name for your connection, this can be whatever you want. I called mine TelusMobility. Then Click Finish.
9. Click on Automatically Dectect Setting.
10. Enter your user name. This is your phone number including your area code followed by @1x.telusmobility.com. Example: 4031234567@1x.telusmobility.com
11. Enter your password. The password is the ESN of your phone. You can find this number on you Moto Q under Start>Settings>Phone Setting>Phone Information.
Under IE Tools > Internet Options > Connections you may want to choose Dial Whenever a Network Connection is not present. This should make it dial-up when you are not hooked up to a LAN. If your LAN is unpluged and you close IE then re-open IE it should give you a window asking which dial up connection to use, select the connection you created, choose connect, wait till it connects, then start surfing.
Telus informed me that you will connect at EVDO speed (apparently its similar to a DSL connection), my connection shows 230 Kbps.
Beaware this is not a free connection they do charge you based on how much data you are downloading and uploading just like if you are surfing on your phone, if you are going to go crazy with this you may need to relook at your plan.
in your instructions, when you mention: 7. Enter the Phone Number #777 then choose next.
do you mean my phone number + #777 ?
it doesn't even seems to want to connect at all, seems like the usb to phone connection is already used or something or cant find port?
i am on telus like you.. but what is wrong? i follow every instructions more than once..

Sorry my laptop was stolen so I haven't been able to post till now. I have to re-set up my new laptop, I will post if I find any problems setting it up with my instructions.
Just enter the number #777.
Make sure you phones modem link is active (take a look at step 1), you may want to try closing active sync too.
Hey guys and gals. This is my first Post to these forums...purchased a MotoQ9C from Sprint the day after thanksgiving. I had the Blackberry 8830 Worldphone, but its lack of a camera was bugging me too much, so I opted for this phone. Like it so far, these forums have been a great help.
I just wanted to put my two cents in on this connecting your Moto to a laptop and surfing. I'm an Engineer and out in the field alot of times with my contractors, and I've opted to download June Fabric's PDANET (PdaNet -- Use your Treo smartphone as a Wireless Modem for your PC).
The app is fairly cheap, and it let's you connect to the internet via the phone as well. I have the unlimited data plan, and to the phone (and to Sprint) it simply looks as though you were browsing the internet from your phone, NOT tethered. The connection speeds are "ok", fast enough to let me pull files down really fast while on the road. I think I maxed out once at 600KBS, so I think its something with the software, but hell, that's plenty fast if you have NO other internet connection at the time. Simply let ActiveSync setup a relationship with your phone and laptop, install the software on your PC, it will automatically install on the phone, and that's it. Once you plug the phone in, the software automatically detects it, and lets you connect. There is a 30 day free trial, so you can't go wrong (plus, it has an EVDO Speed Boost option).
Keep up the good work on here, this site is bookmarked on all of my computers and on my phone.
Do not try using PDAnet if you have Verizon.Just a fair warning. You'll get double charged...from pdanet and from verizon for the data charges. They've figured it out
