How can I install a "zip" file properly on my Q?

Hi to all. Thanks to everyone for thier input when it comes to helping eachother out. I'm new to the WM5 smartphone arena, so I definately appreciate everyones help with unanswered questions; especially the "hacks". I love em'.

I actually have 2 questions that have been bugging me for weeks:

1) How can I properly install a "zip" file to my Q after I've downloaded it to my PC?

2)Can anyone recomend a solution for transferring my "personal, commercial DVD's" to my Q without have to buy additional software?

Thanks to any and all in advance.

Welcome to the forums!

Similar questions come up a lot so I thought I would take a few minutes and put together a tutorial on how to install a program on a Windows Mobile phone.

First, I have to get this out of the way... By default Windows hides extensions of known file types. ZIP files and CAB files have the same icon. On a PC both are archive files and act much the same when opened but on a Windows Mobile phone a CAB file is an installer. To show extensions for known file types do the following:
  1. Open My Computer.
  2. For Windows XP click Tools then Folder Options. For Windows Vista click Organize then Folder and Search Options.
  3. Click the View tab.
  4. Clear the checkbox next to Hide extensions for known file types.
  5. Click OK.
Two types of installers:

A Cabinet (CAB) file is one of the two types of installers for your phone. The other is an Executable (EXE) file. CAB files are run from your phone. EXE files are run from your PC.

CAB Files:

When opened using File Manager on the Phone a CAB file begins installing a program. DO NOT open a CAB file on your PC and extract the contents. Copy the CAB file to your phone using one of the following methods.
For Windows XP:
  1. Open ActiveSync.
  2. Click Tools then Explore Device.
  3. Copy the CAB file to an appropriate place on your phone (The root of the device is "\". If you have a storage card then the root of the storage card is "\Storage Card".).
For Windows Vista:
  1. Open Windows Mobile Device Center.
  2. Click File Management then Browse the contents of your device.
  3. Copy the CAB file to your phone (The root of the device is "\". If you have a storage card then the root of the storage card is "\Storage Card".).
To install the CAB file do the following on your phone:
  1. Press Start then File Manager.
  2. Browse to the location where you copied the CAB file.
  3. Highlight the CAB file then press the center select button.
  4. Follow on-screen instructions to install the program.
EXE Files:

To install a program that has an EXE installer run the executable from your PC. During the install the installer will use ActiveSync (or Windows Mobile Device Center) to transfer files to your phone. The installer will continue on your phone. Follow on-screen instructions on your PC and on your phone to install the program.

For you second question, I use Fairuse Wizard to convert my dvd's to avi format to copy to my SD card to watch on my Q.

Also the program allows you to reduce the audio & video quality, and remove the extra features so it will fit on your Q. Mine are around 250mb.

I'm on my Q now so I can't provide you a link. If you search this forum for Fairuse Wizard, there is a thread somewhere that has the download link and a tutorial.

Oh yeah it's free.
