Angry Billed for small amount of data access every month

My wife has a Q but doesn't have an unlimited data access plan like I do (since we both have smartphones, it doesn't really pay to have two separate unlimited data access plans). So she has no data access plan at all -- she is charged for every kilobyte that is used.

The trouble with this is that even though she never initiates any data access herself, the PHONE periodically goes on the internet for some unknown purpose. The Verizon operator I talked to did not know enough about technology to explain why. She seemed to indicate that it has something to do with internet synch or something. Why is the phone polling the internet? Can I turn off this functionality or stop it from happening? I guess this is a question for them, but -- why wasn't I told about this when I bought the phone? The data charges are ranging from $6 - $20 per month.

I was told that the phone connects to the internet periodically to check for internet updates, and that connection to motorola can stay open for hours or days. If lots updates are released in a month, the guy said that one of his customers got a $1,000 bill without using any data usage intentally. I also asked if you could turn it off, then the guy said, What is the point of a Q without data usage? so I don't know...

I've never heard of the Q calling home (Moto) for anything. Check your settings and see if there is a TSR running.

make sure you kill all tasks, by running any of the msn programs such as messenger or hotmail a task called pmsnserver.exe becomes active and uses the 'net' so it can push you messages and mail for your msn/hotmail accounts. plus if she sends or receives MMS , not text messages, it uses your data connection also.. and in your settings disable report errors to microsoft... that should be it for standards applications that would connect to the net.. see if any of these are the culprits.

I also have no data plan with Verizon and I asked Verizon to block data access so I would not get hit with any small or large data bills. The phone is great without a data plan but I would love to get one if it was not too expensive.
Do as I did, and complain via email to verizon telling them to lower their data plan to a reosanable level. Cingular is offering an unlimited data plan for 19.99..... I'm waiting for their response, i told them that i would leave verizon if this was not rectified....We'll see but I won't hold my breath...

I've heard that if you sync via bluetooth, verizon considers it as going online. Try the USB cable method if this is the case...

Check this webpage out as an alternative to verizon data plan

my phone seems to periodically log onto the internet for no apparent reason.... I just get the lil computer with two opposite pointing arrows icon up top and will have no programs running... This month I got a $50 data charge and only checked my email like twice for a few minutes.. I'm going to dispute it but this is ridiculous....

I too had that same problem. It would connect to the internet all the time. It is searching for updates via internet. I called Verizon and had them block internet access but then I wasnt able to receive any MMS messages. So now I have the unlimited plan but maybe someday Verizon will lower there data plan fees to what others are charging which is about $20.
